Wood Selection for Outdoor Playsets

Wood Selection for Outdoor Playsets

All PAFICPLAY wood playset outdoor products are made from solid China fir (Chinese cedar), scientifically known as Cunninghamia lanceolata.
China Fir is a softwood with a beautiful natural grain, pleasant fragrance, and natural resistance to decay and insects. It is widely used for residential swing set play set products because of its strength, durability, and cost-effectiveness.
The logs are milled into rectangular boards and cut to the required lengths for manufacturing.

Wood Treatment for Outdoor Playsets

The cut wood boards for our wooden outdoor playset and wood playground set products are kiln dried to achieve a moisture content below 18%, helping avoid splits caused by rapid moisture loss.
The kilns are built and maintained in accordance with FSC requirements.
Before entering some countries, the wood used for wooden outdoor playset and wood playground set products must be accompanied by a kiln-drying treatment certificate for customs and quarantine clearance, proving that the wood has undergone the required pre-treatment.

Splits and Cracks in Wooden Swing Sets

Splits and Cracks in Wooden Swing Sets

Splits and cracks will occur in timber used for a play swing set and wooden swing set as it expands and contracts with humidity and temperature changes. They will occur particularly in round pole timbers, but also in square cut timber, and they are found in new sets as well as old ones.
If wood which has a similar moisture content to the natural surrounding is used, cracking in a play swing set and wooden swing set is greatly reduced.
Whilst these can appear quite large and alarming, these cracks do NOT affect the strength, integrity, and durability of the play equipment. What you need to worry about is trapping kids’ little fingers in there. Anything over 10mm is considered dangerous for children and should be looked at.
Applying a preservative can greatly help prevent cracks and splits. Once it is applied, they can then treat all exposed areas. However, this means that the outside of the wood has a high moisture content. If this can be allowed to dry out slowly in more controlled conditions, often taking up to three months, the end result will be a greatly reduced incidence of cracking.

It is critical to perform a full structural inspection and tighten all bolts at the beginning of each play season.

Stain & Seal

Apply high-quality water-based acrylic sealant. This protects cedar lumber from UV rays and moisture, prolonging system life.

FAQ

what to put under a swing set?
The best materials to put under a swing set include rubber mulch, engineered wood fiber, playground sand, rubber tiles, or artificial turf with shock pads. These materials help improve playground safety by reducing impact during falls.
A proper playground surface also improves drainage, reduces mud, and keeps backyard play areas cleaner. Concrete and hard-packed surfaces are generally not recommended for residential playground equipment.
At Pafic Play, we design backyard playsets that work with a variety of safety surfacing systems for family outdoor use.
An obstacle free safety zone is the clear open space around playground equipment where children can play safely without hitting nearby objects such as fences, walls, trees, or other structures.
Safety zones are especially important around swings, slides, monkey bars, and climbing features because children need adequate movement space during play. Proper spacing also helps playgrounds comply with EN71 and ASTM safety guidelines.
Pafic Play designs backyard playground equipment with safety-focused layouts suitable for residential outdoor environments.
The best backyard playset for a small yard is usually a compact multi-activity design that combines swings, slides, climbing elements, and play towers within a limited footprint.
Space-efficient wooden playsets are especially popular for modern residential backyards because they maximize play value without requiring large installation areas.
At Pafic Play we offer customizable backyard playset solutions designed for different yard sizes and family needs.
Swings should be spaced far enough apart to allow safe movement without collisions during use. Proper swing spacing improves user comfort and helps reduce the risk of accidental contact between children.
The required spacing may vary depending on swing type, beam length, and local playground safety standards such as ASTM or EN71.
Pafic Play designs swing set hardware and backyard playground systems with safety-focused spacing considerations.
A standard 2-swing wooden swing set is about 10–12 feet long. Larger models with 3–4 swings or combo playsets can be 14–18 feet in length.
With proper maintenance, cedar playsets last 15–25 years outdoors. Cedar is naturally rot-resistant, insect-resistant and weather-friendly for backyard playground use.
A swing set should be placed at least 6 feet away from fences, walls, trees and buildings. This creates a clear obstacle-free safety zone for swinging, falling and running around the playset.
Standard swing set chains are typically spaced about 18–24 inches apart per swing seat. This spacing keeps chains from tangling and gives kids enough safe room to swing without touching adjacent chains.
As children grow older, they use backyard playsets in more active and creative ways. Younger kids enjoy simple swinging, sliding and pretend play, while older children use the structures for climbing, monkey bar workouts, group games, social play, and physical fitness activities. Our wooden playsets are designed to grow with kids and support multi-age play.
Wooden swing set is more comfortable and natural; metal swing set is light, easy to move and low maintenance. You can choose according to your need.
